TEENNICK TOP 10 FRESH ARTIST OF THE MONTH: ASTRO
Posted on 02/21/2013 by Lisa
This month on TeenNick Top 10, Nick Cannon has been hanging out with Astro, a rapper from Brooklyn. I had the chance to ask him a few questions about music, rapping, acting, and life. Check out what he had to say:Give our lives a soundtrack. What song would you like people to listen to as they read this interview?Astro: "He Fell Off" (Note from Lisa: You can hear it on Astro's website!)
Congratulations on being TeenNick Top 10's first-ever Fresh Artist of the Month! Aside from that, what's going on in your life this month?Astro: I've released my new Mixtape "Deadbeats & Lazy Lyrics," and I'm in the process of shooting about 4 videos for records off of it.
How'd you get the name Astro?Astro: When I started rapping, I knew I needed a name so I opened the dictionary and the first word I saw was "Astronomical" The meaning was huge and something having to to do with stars; that's what i wanted to be so I called myself "The Astronomical Kid." Now everyone just calls me Astro.
TeenNick Top 10 is all about the hottest music videos... so what are your favorite music videos right now?Astro: Kendrick Lamar's "Backseat Freestyle"Drakes's "Started from the Bottom"Tyler the Creator's "Domo23"
After guest-starring on Person of Interest last year, do you want to do more acting?Astro: Actually, I have. I'm the lead in a feature film that was shot last summer and should be in theaters this summer, and I'm co-starring in a movie that begins filming in March.
You've been rapping for a long time, but a lot of people saw you for the first time on X Factor. Did you expect to do so well on the show?Astro: Yes and no. I knew that a lot of people would like to see something new and different on a music competition, but I wasn't sure if they would vote for rap music. I was pleased to see that America embraced talent, regardless of the genre of music.
You perform on TV and all over the place, but you're also still in school. Do other kids treat you differently after they've seen you on TV?Astro: No. I go to a small private school in Brooklyn and most of the students and faculty treat me like "Brian" and not "Astro."
Who inspires you?Astro: True artists. Anyone who does what they do from the heart. Painters, writers, film makers and musicians.
What's your writing process like?Astro: I use to write all my verses down but not so much anymore. I actually force myself not to use pen and paper, a method I adopted from Jay. It's a great brain development and memory exercise.
What advice would you give someone who's interested in becoming a rapper?Astro: 1. Read a lot. 2. Research the pioneers of hip-hop. Know the history of the culture. 3. And find your own niche. Don't just follow trends.
What was it like working with Nick Cannon on TeenNick Top 10?Astro: Great experience. Nick is a pro at what he does, and for him to pass me the mic and his cameras is an honor. Had a lot of fun!
